The maintenance, operations and development of the Museum are governed by the Canterbury Museum Trust Board under the provisions of the Canterbury Museum Trust Board Act 1993.

A significant proportion of the Museum’s funding comes from the four contributing local authorities, Christchurch City Council, Hurunui District Council, Selwyn District Council and Waimakariri District Council.

Canterbury Museum acquires and cares for world-wide collections of human and natural history, with a focus on Canterbury and the Antarctic. Access to these collections drives research, inspires learning and ignites imagination through stories that surprise and delight our visitors.
