This impressive coat rack by Hamish Southcott is made from hammered corrugated iron and copper cabling which came from a house damaged in the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. Hamish often works with corrugated iron, so he decided to play with the juxtaposition of rough iron and beautiful copper with this work.

An earthquake-damaged house at 19 Admirals Way, New Brighton, was demolished by hand by Rekindle for their project Whole House Reuse. The project encouraged artists, craftspeople and the public to reuse and recycle building materials to make functional artworks. The resulting works were exhibited at Canterbury Museum, 5 June to 23 August 2015 in the exhibition Whole House Reuse. Over 400 works were displayed and several were collected by the Museum for our permanent collection. Southcott’s work is currently on display in Quake City, our special exhibition in Re:Start Mall.
