Christmas Brass Band

At Home with Ivan Mauger

Transport Gallery

Meet one of the greatest riders in the history of motor sport. Nine-time world champion Ivan Mauger will be in the transport gallery meeting visitors and enthralling them with the stories behind the memorabilia on display, including his “Triple Crown Special” gold-plated speedway bike.

Ko te patu o te poi – The beating sound of the poi

Learn how to use natural materials such as harakeke and raupo to make traditional poi. Qiao Yi Lion Dance Team

Welcome in the start of the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Tiger with an amazing display of lion dancing by the Qiao Yi Lion Dance Team. The group will be performing the Chinese Southern Lion (Xing Shi) dance.

Dr Richard Bullen, lecturer in Art History and Art Theory at the University of Canterbury, will discuss the exhibition of paintings and prints from the beautiful ukiyo-e collection of Canterbury Museum.

Pleasure and Play in Edo Japan: Decoding the hidden symbols in Kabuki actor prints

Learn how Kabuki prints celebrate the actors’ duality as fictional stage characters and living superstars. Dr Rachel Payne will decipher the pictorial symbols associated with the actors’ heritage and individual style, and discuss their subtle incorporation into the pictures. Discover how these prints were not just pin-ups of popular performers, but had great significance for connoisseur fans.

Takumi: Japanese Drummers
