Pleasure and Play in Edo Japan

Explore the lifestyle, pleasures and pastimes of townspeople, courtesans and actors in 17th to 19th century Japan. These exquisite ukiyo-e (paintings and prints of “the floating world”) from Canterbury Museum’s collection include rare and exceptional works exhibited for the first time.

Anthony Wilding: Wimbledon Champion 1910 - 1914

This small display commemorates Anthony Wilding’s first victory at Wimbledon in 1910. Wilding, who was born and raised in Canterbury, was Wimbledon champion from 1910 – 1914.

Hurunui Quilts

A colourful display of quilts made by local residents for each of the eight Hurunui libraries. Each quilt has been designed to represent a distinct part of the Hurunui District.

Mō Tātou: Te Hokinga Mai

Ngāi Tahu Whānui, people of Te Waipounamu (the South Island), and Canterbury Museum are proud to present Mō Tātou: Te Hokinga Mai. The return home of this Te Papa curated show is celebrated with the complementary exhibition Mō Kā Uri, which showcases Canterbury Museum’s rich collection of Ngāi Tahu taonga alongside contemporary artwork by leading Ngāi Tahu artists.
