Canterbury Museum

Update from Museum Director

Posted: 12 January 2012

The Museum team are really pleased to have welcomed over 150,000 visitors since we re-opened on 2 September 2011, following 6 months closure for remediation of 22 February 2011 earthquake effects. Staff have put a huge effort into mounting an exciting range of changing temporary exhibitions, and maintaining the longer term galleries in top viewing condition, and are delighted by the visitor response.

Off the Wall: World of WearableArts Up Close is attracting an enthusiastic following with its remarkable range of the best of the award-winning garments from the last decade. WOW’s fusion of art, design and fashion is a brilliant evocation of human creativity. The show closes on 18 March 2012.

The Museum’s buildings continue to perform well in the continuing earthquake aftershocks in Christchurch. Inspections by our structural engineers after each major shake confirm the buildings’ resilience and safety.

The Museum is proud to be part of the growing inner-city life as retail, cafes and other attractions re-establish.
