Although separated by a distance of more than 12,000 kms from Canada, this paper demonstrates that New Zealand shares remarkable similarities both in the nation’s participation in the conflict but also in the ways in which the First World War is commemorated.
The role of the British Empire’s Dominions in the First World War is increasingly the subject of historical study. The centenary commemorations offer a timely opportunity to reflect on the extent to which experiences during this conflict were shared by those on the periphery of Empire.
