Discover spectacular fossils and learn about New Zealand’s fascinating marine reptiles.

Highlights of the exhibition include a huge amethyst geode, the mounted skeleton of an Allosaurus dinosaur and the bones of the huge predatory marine reptile the mosasaur collected and identified by Museum staff in North Canterbury.

We have displays showing radioactive minerals, the giant crab fauna of Canterbury 10 million years ago and one of the most valuable items in the Museum, a fragment of the of the Canyon Diablo Meteorite. At 485 kg, the fragment is the largest piece of this meteorite held outside the US. The meteorite is thought to have crashed into the Arizona Desert about 49,000 years ago. Canterbury Museum acquired this specimen in 1897 in exchange for moa bones.
