The Museum is about to get started on a major redevelopment at our Rolleston Avenue site.
This project is so large and complex that everything inside our buildings – all the exhibits, every single one of the 2.3 million precious taonga and all staff – will have to be moved to temporary premises before construction can start.
The Museum will remain open as we start to move the collection. However, from mid-October we will progressively close galleries to dismantle and pack the displays. Details of how this will affect visitors can be found below. Please note that some of these dates might change as the project develops.
Level 3: From Mid-October
We'll begin packing down the Museum's galleries on Level 3 from mid-October.
Closing 17 October
- Our Mummy
- Ivan Mauger Speedway King
- Operation Grapple: We Were There
Closing 31 October
Closing 7 November
- Asian Arts
- Living Canterbury
Closing 21 November
Level 1: From December
We'll start progressively packing down the galleries on the ground floor (Level 1) in December.
Museum staff are using the lift to move taonga (treasures) out of the building. The lift will remain available for visitors with mobility issues and prams, but please use the stairs if you are able to. We apologise for any delays caused by the mammoth move.
Museum Store and Cafe
The Museum Store and Cafe remain open until further notice.
