201609 Bird Hall

Bird Hall

See beautiful displays and dioramas of all our native species of birds, including those that are rare or extinct.

Highlights of the exhibition include a pair of the fabled huia, beautiful dioramas of New Zealand’s only white heron colony, the New Zealand mountain parrot, the kea, playing in the sub-alpine meadows, a New Zealand falcon’s eyrie, a swamp harrier’s nest, a colony of terns and gulls and a spotted shag rookery on Bank’s Peninsula.

Representatives of all species found in New Zealand are displayed. There are albatrosses flying on the ceiling and even some remarkable street art created by the renowned artist Roa of the insides of a yellow-eyed penguin.
