Canterbury Museum Friends Talk

This talk took place on Tuesday 5 February.

In this talk, Lloyd Carpenter, Lincoln University Senior Lecturer in Māori Studies, will examine one of the Canterbury Museum’s more obscure artefacts: the fireless oven.

Fireless cooker

"Fireless cookery" technology is centuries old

These appliances use technology that is centuries old yet surprisingly, the idea keeps reappearing as new groups find out about the principles of what is often nicknamed "fireless cookery".

The talk will include a history of the technology and its use today, including one version that was briefly popular in the Central Otago gold rush.
