House of Treasures Virtual Treasure Hunt
Collect virtual taonga (treasures) from the Museum’s 150th anniversary exhibition House of Treasures: Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho in a treasure hunt using smartphones.
Your challenge is to use the House of Treasures web app to collect 16 taonga displayed in galleries throughout the Museum.
To collect a treasure, frame it on your phone’s camera and tap the screen to scan it. The app offers clues to help locate the objects in the Museum. Collect all 16 objects and show your phone to staff at the Museum’s front desk to be rewarded with a postcard featuring one of the objects.
The 16 objects are some of the 79 showcased in the House of Treasures exhibition. Twenty-eight rarely-seen treasures are on display in the Level 3 Temporary Gallery and three are in the Museum foyer. Thirty-eight gold-framed objects in the Museum’s galleries are also part of the exhibition.
The House of Treasures treasure hunt is a web-based app using augmented reality technology. It runs on Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android. Access it by scanning the QR code in the Museum foyer or go to treasures.mattar.io. You'll need to be in the Museum to complete the treasure hunt.
