Welcome to our website.

Canterbury Museum has a rich and fascinating history, and an exciting future.

The Museum is growing year on year. Visitor numbers have increased by more than 280,000 in 15 years, innovative exhibitions and events are attracting diverse audiences, significant artefacts are being added to the collection and our curators are contributing to internationally recognised research.

Our aim is to provide the people of Canterbury and our visitors with a world class Museum. We tell the stories of Christchurch and Canterbury, showing locals where they have come from and encouraging respect and understanding in our diverse society.

Highlights of the Museum include the world’s greatest collection of artefacts from the heroic age of discovery in Antarctica, the Māori collections in the Iwi Tawhito and Ngā Taonga galleries, and the quirky kiwiana of Fred & Myrtle’s Paua Shell House at Canterbury Museum. These exhibits are all tourist drawcards in their own right and enhance the Museum’s ability to be a place of ongoing learning and participation for our communities.

We hope you enjoy your visit, come and see us again soon–either on the web or on the ground in Christchurch.
