Amazing Animals Photo Competition Winners 2025 

Vanessa Kennard captured a phenomenal action shot of a kōtare (kingfisher) with a crab in its mouth. The winning photograph in the 18 years and over category depicts the crucial moment the kōtare is about to bite down on its meal. 

This stunning photo was one of over 150 entries from photographers of all ages throughout Waitaha Canterbury for this year's Amazing Animals photo competition. 

The competition’s judging panel convened this week to choose the winners in each of the competition categories: 10 years and under, 11 to 17 years and 18 years and over.

As well as Vanessa Kennard's win in the 18 years old and over category, Will Cassie took out first prize in the 11 to 17 years category with a striking photograph of sheep in a snowy paddock, while the 10 years and under category was won by Finn Madigan for a fun image of a sprightly fantail on a wire.

The three top photographs in each category, along with a handful of highly commended entries, will be on display at the Canterbury Museum Pop-Up until 1 February 2026.
