The Sandman, Marcus Winter, is an internationally acclaimed artist.

Marcus Winter (Ngāpuhi, Te Roroa, Ngāti Pou, Dutch) is an acclaimed New Zealand artist who has gained international recognition for his captivating sand art performances. Drawing deeply from his Māori heritage, Marcus uses sand as a medium to tell intricate stories that reflect the rich cultural traditions of Aotearoa. His performances are mesmerising spectacles where he crafts detailed sand animations on a lightbox, bringing to life the myths, history and natural beauty of his homeland.

You can also create your own sand art masterpieces on a lightbox of your own.

Free performance at Canterbury Museum Pop-Up. Saturday 30 August from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm, and 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm, with 15-minute performances every 30 minutes. Drop in session. No booking required.
