Anthony is Tumuaki Matua/Director of the Museum. He retains a strong interest in his botanical roots and pursues research on island biogeography and floras, lichen floras and Pacific botany. He is the President of the New Zealand Botanical Society.

Current projects include documenting the flora of the Cook Islands by contributing new plant and lichen records to the Cook Islands Biodiversity and Ethnobiology Database and depositing voucher specimens of these records in the Herbarium of the Auckland War Memorial Museum (AK). He continues to support publication of research on the floristics and biogeography of New Zealand’s vegetated northern offshore islands, of which he has visited and studied over 200.
